Beacon

Midterm for Computation Craft

Beacon is a accessory that emits a loud alarm when the wearer triggers (closes the circuit) the sensor with a metallic ring.

I wanted to create a wearable that could possibly interrupt an attack.

Instructables Link (in progress)

Materials List

Alarm: Piezo Butter, Copper Pipe, Copper Tape, 9Volt Battery, Conductive Thread, Resistive Tape, Wool Yarn, Solder

Light: Fair Wire, 3V battery, 3V battery holder

This is an image from the prototyping phase of closing the circuit between a piezo a necklace piece (copper piping), and a 9V battery with needle and conductive thread.

Title: The Healing Lamp

1) Concept + Design + Goal:

The lamp is designed to be environmentally friendly with visible and touchable functions. The branch is the symbol of nature. The natural shapes give us comfortable feelings and emotions.

It is an aesthetically artistic item even the branch lights off. I design for a person who needs to decorate easily on the wall in any place. This can be so simply easy to set up. Or, anyone can make this product in one’s place looking at the instruction.

The function is able to do only “on” and “off”. The branch on the left side has one position. If someone switches down the branch on the right side, then the lamp lights up. It moves easily as magnets on the back of the branch stick together connected to “+” or “-” circuits.

The main point what I learn in this project is to drill the tiny holes for electric flows directly with the branch. The magnets only work for adhering to each other on the opposite surfaces and cannot be flowing electrics over the panel without the holes.

2) Documentation

1. Prototype: A small size branch with circuits. The upper line of circuits is off and the bottom line is on.

2. Materials: a card board, a clear plastic panel, asian traditional paper, a branch, 6LEDs, copper tape, 9v battery, magnets, scotch tape, conductive thread.

3. Draw circuits on the card board.

4. Make the space around 3~4cm with the pieces of the extra boards and place copper tape with magnets.

5. Two different shapes according to the angles.

6. Set up on a table or a wall.

7. Look at the circuits with LEDs and boards from the side.

8. The branch can be placed on the table as an ornament item as well.

9. The branch has three magnet buttons with conductive thread for connecting. The reason why I use the thread is for concealing and making clear circuits.

Title: The Healing Lamp

1) Paper prototypes for feedback

This is my first prototype sketch.

2) Concept and design goal? Who are you designing for?

The healing lamp is an aesthetically artistic item even the branch lights off. I design for a person who needs to decorate easily on the wall in any place. This can be so easy to set up. Or, anyone can make this product in one’s place looking at the instruction. The owner could feel comfortable when it lights up on the wall.

3) Material lists

a card board, a clear plastic panel, asian traditional paper, a branch, 6LEDs, copper tape, 9v battery, magnets, scotch tape, conductive thread

4) Prior art and precedents that inspired your design and direction. I was inspired by one of my projects named by the healing box. The box is designed to be environmentally friendly with visible, audible, and touchable functions. The branch on top of surface is the symbol of nature. I think the natural shapes give us comfortable feelings and emotions and for the lamp project, I want to create this kind of looking and feeling as well. DSC03210

Midterm – Lamp

 Instructables

The idea of the heartbeat lamp comes from my visit of Jeff Koons exhibition at Whitney Museum and the story of my friends from Ukraine.

The piece can be read as a representative of the potential of Ukraine. Power and hope are always there.

midterm concept

So I am making a maze lamp that you can play with it.

Design goal : make an interactive lamp that people can enjoy while having it

Desired interaction : user should feel entertained while using the lamp and

feel happy when they use it.

Intuitive interface :  for the first time you see this, people will not understand but

as you are playing it, they figure out how to light up the lamp.

Articulated audience : everyone ; 3 – 70 age

thought process : I was thinking how can I make it interesting.. and I got interested in

games, and the thinking lead me to one of the simple metal ball games like pinball and stuff.

so I decided to collaborate the game theme to the lamp.

Midterm Concept

My original concept was the create a laser lamp, shot through a liquid container.  However, I had bad luck in the original execution and am now using a circuit based on “Newton’s Cradle.”  I’ll just ordered one for the balls and then I’ll probably laser cut the rest of the structure.

Midterm Concept

For my lamp, I will be constructing a paper (or maybe plastic!) chandelier. Thus far, I’ve laser cut a few protos for chandeliers. This was the most successful:IMG_0412

I intend to incorporate choice in the flame section, using different color LEDs for whatever the user is feeling.

Lego Lamp

1) Prototype

(more pics soon)

2) Concept and design goal (What does your design seek to accomplish? Who are you designing for?

This lamp is an interactive design product. It is a rectangular base that can hold in multiple light boxes that complete the circuit and light up. It  gives users the power to manipulate the design and change the lights based on several situations.

3) Materials list

- LED lights or LED strip

- Battery

- Copper tape

- On/ off switch

- Plexi glass

- Methylene chloride as glue

4) Prior art and precedents that inspired your design and direction.
