A Poem Illustrated by Niki Selken
Week 2 – Miri Park – In Class Circuit & HW Illustration Circuit
In class assignment: parallel circuit with different materials!
Homework: Illustration of a passage, integrating a circuit.
I chose to illustrate a stanza of a song, titled “Lost in Space” by Hyboid. Among the beautiful word choices and imageries that the song includes, the line that stands out to me most evokes an imagery of three distinct states or stages of life, which I interpret to be childhood, adult, and elderly. The “magic man” warns that your third cycle of life is the last cycle, after which there is nothing, only death. I felt it was appropriate to illustrate the three stages as three different colors, and symbolize life with light. The circular layout also fits in very well with how a circuit completes, and allows for freedom with conductive thread on the canvas fabric of the painting.
Complete the (circuit) City
I chose a quote from the book “Invisible Cities” by Italo Calvino. The book follows a conversation between traveler Marco Polo and emperor Kublai Khan. Khan asks Marco to tells him stories about the cities in his empire. Macro describes several cities, speaking about them in terms of memory, desires, signs and scale. (Spoiler alert) In the end you realize Marco is describing just one city from different perspectives and we understand the true complexity of place and memory.
“Cities, like dreams, are made of desires and fears, even if the thread of their discourse is secret, their rules are absurd, their perspective deceitful, and everything conceals something else” (pg.44)
I like the idea of changing perspective, and concealing systems and tried to bring these ideas into my circuit.
Week 2 Project
My inspiration was from Tom’s Midnight Garden. It’s one of my favorite stories of my childhood. I picked the iconic clock as the form of my soft circuit.
I used copper tape, 5 LEDs, and a 3V button battery. When you push the middle part which is the location of the battery. It will trigger the LEDs.
Week 2 – In-class Practice and Quote Path – Grace
1. In-Class Parallel Circuity – Light up Apple’s Icon
Enjoy the “Right!” moment:
2. Illustration Practice – Chocolate Package Design
A chocolate package design that only when people unwrap the package that they are able to see the rest of the famous quote, which is “you never know what you gonna get”, just like the way this line shows.
Some Steps:
1. Prepare materials and tools, and write down the quote in its horizontal flip.
2. Make holes for 7 LEDs, and build a parallel circuit using copper tape and a coin battery.
3. Check functionality and make switches.
4. Use switches to separate LEDs from copper tape, and enclose the whole chocolate box.
5. Enjoy the moment opening it! (Quote may not be clear in phone camera)
Week2: Parallel Circuits & Illustration Project
1. Parallel Circuits 1: Copper tape, 3LEDs, 3v battery, pieces of conductive fabric on paper
2. Parallel Circuits 2: Copper tape, 3LEDs, 3v battery, a piece of wrapping paper printed cameras on a piece of hard board
3. Illustration Project: Copper tape, 2LEDs, 3v battery, a piece of paper on a piece of hard board, black ink pen for drawing
This is a kind of sad story and when I read this book, I was so touched by their relationship and the warm hearts. The scene I chose was impressive and I wanted to light up LEDs on his beautiful blue eyes.
[The Happy Prince by Oscar Wilde]
“My eyes are all that I have left. They are made of rare sapphires, which were brought out of India a thousand years ago. Pluck out one of them and take it to him. He will sell it to the jeweller, and buy food and firewood, and finish his play.”
“Dear Prince,” said the Swallow, “I cannot do that”; and he began to weep.
“Swallow, Swallow, little Swallow,” said the Prince, “do as I command you.”
So the Swallow plucked out the Prince’s eye, and flew away to the student’s garret.
Not like a human, like an animal (Week2)
week2 ; hw and class assignment
the children book that I chose was “The little gingerbread man” by Carol Moore.
… “one day, she made a special hatch of gingerbread men because they were extra big. Unfortuately, for the last gingerbread man she ran out of butter and he was alf the size of the others”….
so I made a green-light-white gingerbread man.
I tried to make a gingerbread man standing up and also I tried to make a fabric-switch that
when you press, it lights up.
