Title: The Healing Lamp

1) Concept + Design + Goal:

The lamp is designed to be environmentally friendly with visible and touchable functions. The branch is the symbol of nature. The natural shapes give us comfortable feelings and emotions.

It is an aesthetically artistic item even the branch lights off. I design for a person who needs to decorate easily on the wall in any place. This can be so simply easy to set up. Or, anyone can make this product in one’s place looking at the instruction.

The function is able to do only “on” and “off”. The branch on the left side has one position. If someone switches down the branch on the right side, then the lamp lights up. It moves easily as magnets on the back of the branch stick together connected to “+” or “-” circuits.

The main point what I learn in this project is to drill the tiny holes for electric flows directly with the branch. The magnets only work for adhering to each other on the opposite surfaces and cannot be flowing electrics over the panel without the holes.

2) Documentation

1. Prototype: A small size branch with circuits. The upper line of circuits is off and the bottom line is on.

2. Materials: a card board, a clear plastic panel, asian traditional paper, a branch, 6LEDs, copper tape, 9v battery, magnets, scotch tape, conductive thread.

3. Draw circuits on the card board.

4. Make the space around 3~4cm with the pieces of the extra boards and place copper tape with magnets.

5. Two different shapes according to the angles.

6. Set up on a table or a wall.

7. Look at the circuits with LEDs and boards from the side.

8. The branch can be placed on the table as an ornament item as well.

9. The branch has three magnet buttons with conductive thread for connecting. The reason why I use the thread is for concealing and making clear circuits.

Title: The Healing Lamp

1) Paper prototypes for feedback

This is my first prototype sketch.

2) Concept and design goal? Who are you designing for?

The healing lamp is an aesthetically artistic item even the branch lights off. I design for a person who needs to decorate easily on the wall in any place. This can be so easy to set up. Or, anyone can make this product in one’s place looking at the instruction. The owner could feel comfortable when it lights up on the wall.

3) Material lists

a card board, a clear plastic panel, asian traditional paper, a branch, 6LEDs, copper tape, 9v battery, magnets, scotch tape, conductive thread

4) Prior art and precedents that inspired your design and direction. I was inspired by one of my projects named by the healing box. The box is designed to be environmentally friendly with visible, audible, and touchable functions. The branch on top of surface is the symbol of nature. I think the natural shapes give us comfortable feelings and emotions and for the lamp project, I want to create this kind of looking and feeling as well. DSC03210

Midterm – Lamp

 Instructables

The idea of the heartbeat lamp comes from my visit of Jeff Koons exhibition at Whitney Museum and the story of my friends from Ukraine.

The piece can be read as a representative of the potential of Ukraine. Power and hope are always there.

Midterm Concept

For my lamp, I will be constructing a paper (or maybe plastic!) chandelier. Thus far, I’ve laser cut a few protos for chandeliers. This was the most successful:IMG_0412

I intend to incorporate choice in the flame section, using different color LEDs for whatever the user is feeling.

Midterm Proposal – Headlamp (wink)

A headpiece that lights up with LEDs to create your very own wearable lamp.

1) Prototype – FLORA

Flora prototype

Flora and Neopixel prototype

2) Concept and design goal (What does your design seek to accomplish? Who are you designing for?

The concept for this headpiece (which may become a hat, depending on how the fabrication goes) is a update to ladies’ Art Deco headpieces and is meant to be worn as part of a costume or party attire. It will include a simple switch (metal snap that when connected closes the switch) to turn on the LEDs and may include a mic sensor that would add a whimsical element to it. The embellishments may include wool that has been folding using paper engineering techniques.

3) Materials list (What do you need to build your design)

  • Flora and Neopixels (I’ve been a bit frustrated so far working with the Flora to be honest, and I may switch to an Arduino Trinket or other tiny Arduino along with LEDs)
  • glass beads (reflects the light)
  • mesh or silk fabric
  • mic sensor
  • wool roving (hand needle felted for the comfort of the wearer)
  • metal snaps
  • conductive thread

4) Prior art and precedents that inspired your design and direction.

Midterm Proposal – Fashionable E-Armor

Fashion E-Armor: Cape with Embedded LEDs and Hard Origami Folded Edges

1) Paper Prototype – Will upload images soon.

2) Concept and design goal (What does your design seek to accomplish? Who are you designing for?

With this project, I seek to design a wearable cape with embedded technology and hard folded pleating that would intimidate a potential aggressor. The interior of the piece would be lined with velvet to provide a comforting material touching the wearer. Hard on the outside and soft and reassuring on the inside.

3) Materials list (What do you need to build your design)

  • A thrifted dress/cape that I’ll repurpose
  • LED light strips
  • Power source – 9 volt batteries
  • copper tape or copper thread
  • simple switch
  • scored paper & paper folding techniques

4) Prior art and precedents that inspired your design and direction.

The following images are art and fashion precedents that reflect the aesthetic and structural qualities I will be trying to achieve.

The following animals/crustaceans defend themselves in fantastic ways.

The porcupine is of course an easy analogy to the Fashionable E-Armor:

Midterm Assignment

Design a lamp using the techniques, tools, and materials we have been learning over the last six weeks. Lamp and presentation due Oct. 14. Instructable due Oct. 19. See examples of past projects and inspiration here.

Your theme: Choice

Constraints:
1) MUST use a switch or sensor. RE: You must have a way of controlling the circuit.
2) Must have at least two states (e.g. on/off, fading fast/slow, red/blue, etc)
3) You cannot use jumper wires *unless* it is to connect your circuit traces to the Arduino. In this case, you should consider how to integrate your Arduino into the design. Depending on your time and financial constraints, you may want to explore other types of Arduinos that better fit your design, such as a Lilypad, Flora, Gemma, Arduino Mini, etc.
4) You do not have to use Arduino.

I will be evaluating you along the following categories:
Process
– Paper prototyping interaction and structure
– Grasp of assembly and how to integrate electronics with materials
– Material is appropriate for the project

Concept + Design
– Clear design goal
– Desired interaction accomplished (What should the user be doing or feeling? What action do you want them to perform?)
– Intuitive interface (or convoluted depending on the design goal)
– Articulated audience – who is this for?

Documentation
– Create an Instructable

DUE NEXT WEEK
1) Paper prototypes for feedback (Focus on role or look+feel)
2) Concept and design goal (What does your design seek to accomplish? Who are you designing for?
3) Materials list (What do you need to build your design)
4) Prior art and precedents that inspired your design and direction.
5) Please read ONE of the following and come prepared to share your thoughts on it:
Organic User Interfaces
Pulp-based Computing
Electronic/Computational Textiles and Children’s Crafts

Breathing Hydrangea Lamp

I made a hanging hydrangea lamp that mimics breathing in the darkness. It’s based on an Anthro chandelier (that super casually costs $998, no big). Mine is made out of a paper lantern, with two different sized cupcake liners hot glue gunned on (idea from a DIY genius). There’s a purple LED strip inside, on a lilypad, and it uses the metal skeleton of the paper lantern as a switch. It fades in and out, using pwm.

Emotion Influencing Box

This “emotion influencing box” has a few different settings, the default being a startling red alert, which can be switched to something more calming and peaceful by rotating the dial.  The wires inside are only used to directly connect the nano pins to the copper tape.
