Computational Craft Workshop: LED Handbands

April 20, 2012
D12 Graduate Studio Space, Parsons The New School for Design

During this workshop, a high school domestic science class from out of town came to our lab for a quick lesson in fashion AND electronics. Thirty 9th-11th grade students used premade headbands, LEDs, conductive fabric and thread, and fabric scraps from bag-maker-extraordinaire, Coach to create LED handbands. Students received a quick review of parallel circuits, then drew out the design on their headband. Next the integrated the LEDs into their circuit and sewed them into the headband. After inserting the battery and debugging a few crossed threads, almost everybody had their circuit working. Students left flaunting their rad new fashionable tech for the streets of NYC!
